Can't get graphic installing from live cd ubuntu 10.10 i have nvidia video card

Asked by Mike

I just downloaded Ubuntu to a CD. When I boot from the CD it goes to the opening menu, when i click install, it goes to the purple screen that says Ubuntu that has the moving dots then it goes to a screen that is a whole bunch of black and white lines. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the processor I'm running, dual core 64 bit? Anyone got any ideas?

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?
Did you check the CD for defects once initially booted to?

I believe I say this probably a while back and the cause was insufficient RAM. How much memory does your machine have?

When you get the purple screen with the moving dots, could you press <ESC> key to remove it, and see messages hidden by it, and then report the last one of these messages. I need these data to know if problem occurred during upstart or when the graphic server is launched. If you have a laptop, last message of upstart should probably be "checking battery", which indicates graphic problem.

I'm running 4gb of ram.

I just checked the bootup messages and they ended on checking battery but this is a desktop and the install I'm using is a desktop. I have a nvidia 7800 video card, so what can I do to fix this.

If you see message about battery check, you probably have a graphic server issue.

Ok its definitely a graphics issue, but I dont know what to do from this point, I've looked at other topics and seen where people were told to disable the graphics driver through the command line but i dont know how to do that.

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

I also have this issue with the black and white bars.

These also appear after the "checking battey" line.

I have an asus g60j which has an nvidia 320m or 360m i cannot remember.

Ubuntu 10.4 works without issue and this only occurs when i try to install 10.10

The link from marcobra and following solution 1 worked for me.

For reference my card is an NVIDIA 306M.

You could also boot to root recovery mode with networking and run:

add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates; apt-get update && apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-current-modaliases nvidia-settings

Should help
