Asked by Guillaume Merindol

On my toshiba qosmio x505-890, i can run ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 fine, but when i update it to 10.10 it won't even start and there's a weird maze like image:

That also happens when i boot a live cd 64 bit desktop edition from that computer.

Specs of Qosmio:
Intel® Core™ i7-740QM processor
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 360M
2298MB total: 1GB GDDR5 discrete memory + up to 1274MB shared memory w/NVIDIA® TurboCache™ technology
Blu-ray Disc™ ROM and DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash®
564GB: 64GB SSD (Serial ATA) + 500GB (7200rpm, Serial ATA)
6GB DDR3 1066MHz memory
18.4" widescreen, supports 1080p content

Anyone know what the problem is or how to fix?

And how to report bugs like that?

Hold shift and boot to root recovery console, you can then remove the proprietary driver and reboot, you will then be using the open driver which should work. You can then reinstall the nvidia driver once you log in

For me wifi locks my system when I use high CPU and memory like when running hyper threading. Also has ACPI issues that no seems to know how to work around as of yet and a few other issues. I was in contact with Realtek about the driver issue but after a week they pretty much they gave up as the versions they were sending just kept making it worse. I also have the same issue with the supplied version Ubuntu comes packaged with. I have tried just about every work around and or method thats listed on the net for this wifi chip, I have resorted to using a USB dongle for wifi until I can figure it out more.

The way to get it to boot is to hit f6 when the disk loads and select nomodeset then keep nomodeset until either you update nouveau with the bleeding edge ppa or install your nvidia drivers.

Can you help with this problem?
