Dell 1520 screen problem with Ubuntu 10.04.1

hey, i installed Ubuntu on my Dell 1520 that has a nvidia 8600M gt. at the login screen all i see is vertical lines, some have the same color as the ubuntu default color scheme.
I know the OS is loaded up because I can hear the startup noise. I can even login if i type in my user name and password without being able to see (i can hear the login sound). switching virtual terminals does not help, they are distorted as well.
I can login to the OS but I still cant SEE IT! all i have is orangish-yellow vertical lines. HELP!
