Gnome won't load after upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10

Asked by MichaelReno

I have a HP TC1100, after downloading the upgrade upon reboot I get a tty login screen. I log in and i'm just sitting at a command prompt.
I ran "sudo apt-get -f install"
Then I tried "startx" and get errors basically telling me I have to screens.
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Can you please help?
Thanks !!

there's a typo in my message, where it says "i have to screens" I meant to say "i have no screens"

Boot to recovery root console and remove the nvidia driver, then boot to the desktop system and then re-install the driver. The display driver didn't survive the upgrade

I thought It would be something like that and with Ubuntu my skills at a command prompt leave a lot to be desired, but I'm working on that. How do I go about removing the nvidia driver?

Then why are you using ALPHA software. Maverick is full of bugs and feature holes and is not ready for casual users like yourself.

You can remove the driver with:

sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

I STRONGLY recommend you cease this nonsense and reinstall Lucid.
