nvidia input not supported full screen games

Asked by john trim

I have a Envision lcd monitor and now running ubuntu 10.0.4.1 .. I have been having a problem for almost a year now. Whenever i try to play a game that requires full screen mode my monitor goes black and input not supported comes up in a gray box. my computer also uses an nvidia graphics card. I'm sure its just some setting somewhere but i am really not very knowledgeable in ubuntu. so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. P.S. I may not know much but i'm real good at following instructions if somebody wants more info in order to help me. Thanks! John

I'd try:

sudo nvidia-xconfig; gksudo nvidia-settings

Set the display up as you wish. Once you are done click "Save to X config file"

Then restart the x server (or reboot). This may help. I used to have this in games and had to manually setup the display in the games config file to get them to work.

Ok i tried to do what you suggested and this came up along with the nvidia control application. Which by the way i think i have tried just about every option in it to try and get it to work..lol anyway i dont know how to set the display up from here.Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

ok were making progress! before when i tried to save to an xconfig file i would get an error message.. i set my resolution in the nvidia control panel and then saved it and rebooted. still black screen when i try to start any full screen game. any ideas which setting covers this particular feature like a maximum resolution or something when the games take over?

My problem isnt with installation or startup black screens. only when opening a full screen game. other than this little problem ubuntu has been the best operating system i have ever used. i've been living with this for over a year now though so i guess i can wait a little longer till i learn a little more about linux and figure out whats going on though. thanks John

I had the same issue - black fullscreen with audio OK in most opengl or sdl games under KDE 4.10. (Mint Nadia)
It may be joined with: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=297146

What helped me:

System settings/desktop effects/advanced unchecked "Suspend desktop effects for fullscreen windows"

It may affect game performance but I am able to run all games in fullsceen.

Can you help with this problem?
