10.4 live cd not working on hp pavilion a1410n

Asked by Cliff Miller

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The Ubuntu 10.4 LTS live cd is not working on my recently acquired HP pavillion a1410n. It doesn't run when I insert the disc even though the dvd drive has auto play enabled and when I reboot with the disc in the dvd drive my monitor always automatically goes into sleep mode. I've tried the disc on a laptop and it works just fine. So the problem is not the disc itself. I installed windows 7 right after acquiring the pc and had no problems with that install. it's not likely a problem with dual-boot since the pc had an XP/Vista dual-boot when I bought it. My only thought is to purchase the recovery cd's from Hp start over. There is a BIOS update available but only for the copy of XP that came with the system. Could the problem be with the system's BIOS? Or has anyone encountered this problem before and know any other way around this. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04 and have been a huge fan ever since.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you check the CD for defects?
Did you burn as slowly as you could?
Have you tested your RAM for errors?

May be your Ubuntu live install cd is not perfect or it can't be read from your cdrom drive please verify it...

Here some general note on install Ubuntu and howto to get a good ubuntu iso cd image (.iso) to burn on a cd:

- Here the steps to install Ubuntu 10.04 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall
- Here a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaqaDZZ_P0g&feature=fvw

The main ubuntu site is this: www.ubuntu.com and the download location is this
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Ubuntu prerequisites: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Ubuntu 10.04 release notes: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol.

- if you are using Windows please install a torrent client i suggest you http://deluge-torrent.org/
and download the iso using a .torrent link from here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

2) PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS go to the next steps.

3) burn the iso image onto a cd, to do it install and use http://infrarecorder.org/?page_id=5 burn the cd at lower speed you can do and activate the data verify

4) insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and reboot your pc. YOU MUST NOT SEE Windows starting and you can try Ubuntu from cdrom and then install it

If you have trouble with installation (the system freeze or you can't complete it) be sure to read the above suggestions, then:

1.a ) Please boot entirely (you must not see windows starting) from Ubuntu live install cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk

Please select "Check disc for defects" and press enter to test if your cd-driver can read in a good way the live install cd... or if the install cd have some defective file in it.
Then please also perform a Test memory to be sure your pc RAM memory have not any issue

If you get a blank screen at boot after install or booting from the Ubuntu install cd please read:

Apparently no one has fully read my post. As I've stated i tried the disc on another pc and it worked just fine so no, it is NOT the disc itself. I've been burning discs for years so I'm not in need of any patronizing. I'm mearly wondering if anyone else with this model pc has had the same problems and if so, have they found a solution.

The proof of your disk can be read without errors on another pc... not is the md5sum verify, please read my previous message...

The message i sent is the suggested way to install Ubuntu,
i never try a disk on another pc to be sure if the cd match the md5sum, please be technical verify the md5sum....
md5sum is a tol thinked to do this kind of checks or i think you are wasting your time.

Hope this helps

I'm sorry if I was rude before Marco, I'm very frustrated. Yes the md5checksums are the same. I also checked the disc for errors on the aforementioned laptop and the disc has no errors. So I reiterate my problem. when i boot from the cd I get the copyright screen, then the purple splash screen, then a black screen with a cursor flashing in the upper left hand corner of the screen, then my monitor goes into sleep mode.

I just looked in BIOS on a whim and noticed that my pci-e port has priority although I DON'T have a PCI-E video card installed and am running the on board graphics. Would it make a difference if I gave the on board graphics priority over pci-e? Also my cd rom is the second boot priority with floppy being first (although I don't have a floppy drive so that is being by-passed already).

a) Please tell can you access to a pseudo tty by pressing the ctrl+alt+f2 keyboard keys...?

b) Please tell you video card brand and model...

if you have access to point (a), please made login then type:

lspci | grep -i vga

to read your video card detail

Thanks

the graphics are GeForce 6150 on-board graphics. I cannot get to a login screen before the monitor goes into sleep mode. I will try the ctrl+alt+f2 combo.
