screen, graphics and input device problems

this is similar to the message i recieved.
ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. you will need to configure these yourself.

I used apt-get to load nvidia 173. had to use aptitude first. same with nouveau. I use my install cd to access the internet for information and couldn't find anything that worked for me. Tried to configure xorg.conf no file in X11 directly.

try booting to recovery root mode and running:

nvidia-xconfig

Then reboot, may help.
