NVIDIA Driver Blank Screen

Asked by Mark Fonda

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 successfully on a Gateway PC but when I tried to change the Appearance Preferences - Visual Effects from None to Normal a new Nvidia device driver package was loaded. The screen refreshed and then went blank. I rebooted and still blank. I went into recovery mode and still blank. I can do a live boot with a USB drive and I get the GUI but I don't know what to change. I can also get a command prompt when the screen is blank with Ctrl-Alt-F1. I have read several dozen articles and questions here and cannot find any solutions. Please help.

I solved my blank screen problem by using recovery mode and resetting the graphics configuration, then rebooting in normal mode. I could not initially get into recovery mode because being a single-user installation, the Grub menu does not appear during boot and nothing would happen when pressing the ESC key during the boot process, as I had read. Well the problem was that the key to invoke Recovery Mode in Ubuntu 10.04 has been changed to SHIFT, which I found nowhere in this forum or in the Ubuntu documentation, but in a third-party article. So anyway, once I booted up while pressing the SHIFT key after the Bios screen, I was able to get into recovery mode. Then, my second problem was that there are two lines for Recovery Modes and the first one resulted in a bank screen, but the second one got me into the Recovery Menu and then I was able to solve the problem using Reset Graphics Configuration to Default. My conclusion is that the documentation for Ubuntu Recovery Node needs improvement. Thanks for your help anyway.
