I would not try to install the driver manually, unless no other solution.
To install the driver, use "Hardware Drivers" in the "System" menu. There you should see the different drivers, and you can enable the recommended one.

Did you already try this?

There are explanations how to install it there:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual

But it includes steps which are optional I think, and which require an internet connection (all the "sudo apt-get..." commands).

I would really recommend you to find an internet connection to install the driver using the included tool, as it will take just 5 minutes and install everything properly. The manual installation is really complicated, and there is always a danger to mess up with the config.

I have the same care MX440 and having driver 96.43.17 which was downloaded and installed by update manager in ubuntu 10.04... and here is the download link from nvidia
http://www.nvidia.in/object/linux_display_ia32_100.14.11_in.html

I have copied and pasted the manual installation procedure from nvidia website for the driver....

To download and install the drivers, follow the steps below:

STEP 1: Review the NVIDIA Software License.

You will need to accept this license prior to downloading any files.

STEP 2: Download the Driver File
Download - NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11.pkg1.run

SuSE users: please read the SuSE NVIDIA Installer HOWTO before downloading the driver.

STEP 3: Install
Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11.pkg1.run" to install the driver. NVIDIA now provides a utility to assist you with configuration of your X config file. Please see Chapter 3 of the README or run 'man nvidia-xconfig' for details on usage. Instructions for those wishing to edit their X config file by hand can also be found in the README.
