no display after boot

I am attempting to boot Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB flash drive on my laptop. I get the boot screen and choose to boot Ubuntu and the code comes on screen and appears to run properly but then screen goes black. I have an Intel i7 processor, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 310M video card. The screen resolution in Windows 7 is 1366x786.

This is my first time using any Linux operating system as it is for college class and therefore have no experience with it. Any advice would be welcome.
