Visual Effects with NVidia GeForce 8400 GS?

Asked by flametai1

I'm running Gnome Ubuntu 10.04

I have tried the propriety drivers for NVidia GeForce 8400 GS 512MB RAM DDR2 series cards, I go to System>Preferences>Appearance then to the "Visual Effects" tab, click on Normal, or Extra, then it comes up with a pop up that says "Searching for installed drivers", then the screen flashes a few times, the Appearance window when hovered over makes the mouse say it's busy, then another pop up comes up and says "Desktop effects could not be enabled"

Since this did not work I noticed on NVidia's site they have a newer driver there, thinking that may fix it, I download and install it. Same exact thing happens, I have not seen a fix for this anywhere, any help/suggestions/solutions would be greatly appreciated.......This is one of the main reasons why I installed Ubuntu

Also almost forgot, it is a PCI card if that even matters.

Not at all. As long as the system can see the chip its fine (it will by default)

I always use this (works with my 512Mb 6150 onboard nvidia):

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-185

HTH

Ok try:

sudo apt-get install reinstall dkms

Then reboot, the kernel module NEEDS to be built in this stage.

If its still no good run:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

Then reboot.

flametai1,

It's already in Hardware Drivers. Go to the one that says (versio current) [Recommended] and activate it.

Hey flametai1,

Sorry about that. I had that same problem before on a fresh install and couldn't figure out for the life of me I needed to do that again.

Did you uninstall the one from the Nvidia site you activated?
