How do I enabled desktop effects in Kubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by tdn on 2010-06-03

Having installed Kubuntu 10.04 LTS, I tried to enabled desktop effects by clicking upper left corner in a window and selecting Configure Window Behavior. Then I checked "Enable desktop effects" followed by Apply. This gives me the error:

``Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type.''

How do I enable desktop effects? It worked fine in Kubuntu 9.10 (although I used the binary nvidia driver).
My hardware should be quite capable of doing 3d. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with a nVidia Quadro FX 570M.

I have tried installing the xorg-edgers PPA, but that just broke X. So I had to revert it using ppa-purge.

I hope you can help.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install dkms; sudo apt-get install nvidia-graphics-drivers-195

Should be ok.

I did as you suggested, but the last command gives me this error:

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-graphics-drivers-195

E: Couldn't find package nvidia-graphics-drivers-195

By the way, would this install the binary nvidia driver on my system? I would really prefer nouveau, if it can be made to support 3d. Because it supports xrandr. If not, nvidia would be acceptable.

ok try:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-185

Should be ok, I looked at the PPA contents for that package and thought they had changed it's name, no worries.

Will this install the nvidia proprietrary driver?
Is it possible to get desktop effects working with Nouveau?

andypiper (andypiperuk) said : #6

I completely removed nouveau from my system as I just couldn't get it to work acceptably, I'm using the binary nVidia drivers on my Thinkpad.

tdn (spam-thomasdamgaard) said : #7

actionparsnip: I just tried installing nvidia-glx-185, but it did not work. I still get the same error as above, when I try to enable desktop effects.

What to do?

tdn (spam-thomasdamgaard) said : #8

Do I need to enabled nvidia-glx in some way after installing the nvidia-glx-185 package?

Hello,

The Nouveau driver (xserver-xorg-video-nouveau) should be installed by default. If desktop effects don't work with it, it appears it's not enough (although the problem may be different). To enable a proprietary driver, please follow this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/hardware/C/restricted-manager.html

If the problem persists or if you have some other questions, please feel free to ask.

Andrea, is there any hope that nouveau in Kubuntu 10.04 will be made to support Desktop Effects in the near future? Or that a PPA that solves the problem will be issued?

I will consider installing the proprietary nvidia driver, however, this means that things like xrandr will not work. :(

PS.
The help.ubuntu.com link you pasted seems to be for 9.04 and not Kubuntu 10.04.

Sorry, I'm not aware of any development plan.

Yes, sorry. The guide for 10.04 is this one:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/hardware/C/jockey.html
however it contains the same text.

Andrea, the guide in your link seems to be for Ubuntu, not Kubuntu. It refers to: System → Administration → Hardware Drivers, which does not exist on my system. I have checked System Settings > Advanced > Hardware, but it does not seem to have anything on display drivers.

Oh, sorry. You should be able to enable desktop effects from KMenu→System→Desktop Effects.

tdn (spam-thomasdamgaard) said : #14

Andrea, it is when I do that, I get this error:
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type."

This was the cause of my original question.
