NVIDIA graphic driver won't install & codec, firefox question

Asked by tim

I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04...then I checked for updates, then I updated Synaptic Package Manger after which the "install driver' icon appear in my toolbar. When I tried to activated the NVIDIA I got this error -- System Error: install Archives () failed

My computer is a desktop Acer AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, GeForce 6100 nForce 405, MCP61 High Definition Audio, 1G Memory DDR2

Also if it is ok to ask here what procedure should I use to load the necessary codec and other packages I need to use FireFox. I had quite some problem with abode flash player in the past, and with loading the codecs so I want to be sure to do it right this time.

Sorry, I have no time to help.
Have a look at Synaptic and locate NVidia driver, then try to reinstall driver. It will perhaps work.
I have Ubuntu 10.04, a NVidia card and proprietary driver "version current" (previous one is 173).
Package is nvidia-current.

Back to the nvidia drivers...now that it is installed when I go to Preference, Monitor I get this message..."It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" I clicked yes, but to be honest I'm not sure what that means...the thing is I want to change my refresh rate but when the nvidia X Server Setting comes up there isn't an option to increase it from 60 Hz...which I think is a bit low and not good for the eyes.

Start by https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu.

For Firefox, try to open a flashplayer video. It should propose automatically installation of one of the three flash player.

If you have a LCD screen, 60Hz is not a problem.
It was with CRT screen.
On a LCD, the image is persistent, and you see all manufacturers promising less persistent images.
I'm sitting 10 hours per day in front of 60Hz image without being tired!

Interesting about the LCD screen...good information. I checked out the link you sent...I'll try it...looks a little complicated so I'm going to do it tomorrow when I'm fresh. Thanks!

Ok...I got everything up and running. Funny thing was when I rebooted my computer instead of loading the ubuntu it loaded a black screen with text asking for my login and password. After rebooting 3 times I finally got back to the 'normal' screen...I hope this isn't going to be a future problem as I have no idea how to properly get out of that mode, and into the normal mode except by hitting the power button.
