terminal window opens but is blank GX150

I have a Dell GX150. I install ubuntu 9.04 it seems to work ok with firefox. When I try to use the update manger I only see a blank window. When I try to open a terminal, I only get a blank window. It appears that Gnome tries to start the application, but the application never starts.

What can I do to fix this?

Solution:
Get a tty: Ctrl-ALT-Shift-F1
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop
sudo reboot

when login window appears change session to xfce
