No device support for StarTech DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI adapter

Asked by mjlcapdagde

The adapter described below is necessary for connecting my Apple Cinema display A1083 30-inch monitor to a DisplayPort integrated Intel graphics processor.

I have a dual-boot system on a Cirrus7 Nimbus fanless PC.

When using Windows7, the adapter works well at full 2560x1600 resolution. intel device driver has no problem understanding the adapter and the monitor it is outputting to.

When using Ubuntu 14.04 on the same system, the adapter is not recognised and the display image is split horizontally into two buggy, flickering frames of mirrored content.

Clearly this is a device support problem having some relationship to the dual-link aspect of the dual-link DVI output format.

This problem has caused trouble to users of a similar adapter made by Bizlink. It has been logged as a bug but there has been no progress at all on solving it by Ubuntu/Linux developers for several years. It absolutely rules out my use of Ubuntu for as long as it persists.

The discussion of the bug is here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56834

It is the same as mine in most aspects except the symptoms of the mirrored output.

I would like some assistance with making Ubuntu recognise and use the adapter properly.

Update to the issue described above. Updating Ubuntu to 14.10 and then updating the kernel to 4.2 resolved the display issue. Ubuntu now recognises the display as 'Apple Cinema' and outputs flawlessly at 2560x1600 resolution. However, installing the kernel update immediately broke my wireless adapter connectivity!

To make matters worse Ubuntu cannot connect via wired LAN either. This problem is also reported on the Windows 7 partition of my system, so it is likely to be on the router side, but I have no idea how to resolve it.
