Visual effects keep regressing to "No effects" Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Nolan

Visual effects keep regressing to "No effects" Ubuntu 10.04. This is causing other video problems in the Desktop environment.

I don't have a "Hardware" app. I do have a 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02)
I have checked several forums but to no avail.

Visual effects are provided by compiz window manager, when the graphics card doesn't support 3d acceleration - no visual effects.
It's expected that 10.04 can use an alternative window manager called metacity as fallback option. If that doesn't happen, please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
metacity --replace

Lucid desktop has less than 5 months support left in it. I suggest you upgrade soon.
