Slow boot, idle for 20s. Xorg problem?

My PC seems to idle for about 20 seconds during boot.

The 20 second delay is clearly visible there, seconds 22 to 42. This correndsponds with two distinctive points on the Xorg bar, and also with the start times of lightdm (at second 22) and xfce4-session (at second 42).

Is this a problem with Xorg / lightdm / graphics drivers? How do I find out what's going on? And how do I fix it?

Possibly relevant hardware details:
Intel Core i5-2500 CPU, Intel HD 3000 graphics, Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3 mainboard, Samsung SSD 830.

Afaik: no. I'm not an hardware expert, though.

This is the integrated sandy bridge graphics HD 3000. It's a desktop system, not a notebook. There is no additional graphics card installed, and afaik aftar a quick look through the manual there is no additional graphics chip on the mainboard.

I just found out the delay disappears when I have no monitor connected to the lower of two HDMI ports.

Two monitors connected: delay.
One monitor connected, lower hdmi port: delay.
One monitor connected, upper hdmi port: no delay.
It does not matter which monitor is connected to which port.
