Is ubuntu 12 compatible with intel 845gbv chipset and it's graphics ?

very new to ubuntu or for that matter linux.
want to get a step by step info about how to fix the graphics card "unknown" problem and it's related slow performance in display.
PC Config:
MB: Intel 845gbv
PRO: P4, 1.7ghz
RAM:1.25 gb
Also, would like to know which version of ubuntu is good for this config.

Try the boot option:

nomodeset
