Is the the whole screen that goes black, or just the app you are watching it in?

Whole screen goes black. I switched to gnome classic 2D (no compiz) and hope that that would solve the problem. What do you think? Synaptic shows xorg driver for i915 installed, but also xorg driver for radeon, and other drivers. Don't I need just the xorg 1915 driver installed? Should I remove the other video drivers via synaptic?

DO you use switching graphics? DOes the system have a make and model?

Can you help with this problem?
