xubuntu 11.10: update causes graphics failure

Was running xubuntu 11.10 on a machine that can barely handle it

Typed:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

now i get little more than a white screen when i boot up?

What video chip do you use?
What make and model is the system?

Thanks for the quick reply :)

Running a laptop with 512 DDR ram and Intel 940GML processor.

Im not sure what the video chip is, i just get pure white screen so cant access the terminal.

do the keys to access the BIOS remain the same?

add the boot option:

nomodeset

I cant do anything at all

its black screen, then white screen

at no stage are teh graphics card working and i dont know hot to get in to bios to select boot options

Further update: if i hammer f4 i get into the recovery mode, and the root shell :)

where would i edit (or create) the boot options... im guessing its /boot/
