Ubuntu 11.10 "Unknown Driver" for Intel GMA 4500

Asked by Dustin Williams

Using an HP G60-553NR, I've been trying to get the driver to become recognized in hopes that I will get better performance. As it is I can't even use my webcam because it either lags profusely, or it glitches out altogether. I've tried to follow [José Antonio Rey]'s advice but when I enter the command "sudo X -configure :1", I get the this issue "Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed." Not sure where to go from there. Thanks.

You may need an xorg.conf file if the disaply is misbehaving. Some systems still need the file

My issue is with creating the xorg.conf file. I get an error whenever I try to. Is there some other way to make it?

Have you tried the precise liveCD. It has later drivers and a later kernel. It may help

OK disregard my last post. After installing Gnome Shell, Sys Info is properly displaying my graphics component. I don't know whether it was just installing Gnome Shell or my immense fiddling with various files that did it, but I am up and running smoothly. I'll post my final result here. Thank you.
