Hi, I don't know the Intel Brookdale video chipset myself, but you might want to see if there's any drivers available for it. Open up "Software Sources" and make sure that the repository "Restricted Software (Multiverse)" is enabled. Next open up "Additional Drivers" and let it search for and install any available drivers for your graphics card.

No you can't use the Windows driver with any Linux OS. Google searches on this older graphics chipset only produces results like this one:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/53667/fixing-display-issues-on-intel-82845gl

and the common theme seems to be that the only fixes that owners of this graphics found card satisfactory was either upgrading to a newer Nvidia graphics card or changing the OS to Lubuntu.

Since you can download Lubuntu for free and it will run much faster on older hardware this is an option you should seriously consider. How old is your computer? It's quite likely that you'll be a lot happier with the performance of Lubuntu in any case.

I recently bought a new Graphics card for my older test machine since the old ATI Rage graphics chipset wasn't capable of running Unity. It was a relatively cheap fix so if you really want the suite of applications that come with Ubuntu rather than the lighter versions of applications that come with Lubuntu then you need to consider this option.

Another option that was mentioned was to make sure that you are running Unity2d, not Unity3d which is most likely to cause you problems. At the lightdm login screen click on the gear icon at the top right of the login panel. Select "Unity2d" and complete the login. (Note: if you make a mistake with the password you'll have to select Unity2d again as it resets each time.) The reason why I didn't suggest this as the first option to try was that those that did seemed to think that the performance was so bad that the other options were preferable.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Chris

Why yes, it is running it. Lubuntu will probably run faster and use less memory though, so the final decision is up to you. The best thing would probably be to download Lubuntu and try it.

Chris.

Yes, Lubunt should be fine on that graphics card... according the reports from people who have done it.

Xubuntu likewise should be OK also but you should test it out thoroughly before installing it. I did try Xubuntu on my ATI Rage graphics card before I upgraded my machine and it ran fine, but that doesn't definitely mean your card will OK.
