Bug #727594

Asked by Colin Knight

When upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 the system would boot but the display comes in colored blocks and although the menus seem to work, they flash on the screen for a minute period and disappear and it impossible to open the terminal. It seems to be related to this bug for i915 but how can I load an update if I boot 10.10 on a CD to the 11.04 on the hard disk.

I am a newbee to Linux/Ubuntu.

I did an update/upgrade last night of 11.04 using sudo apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade. It is almost the same; After logging in there is a purple/red screen then when giving the desktop 3/4 of the screen is the desktop and the other 1/4 the purple/red screen of before, then highlighting an area from the 3/4 is ok until right mouse button is released and that area also shows the purple/red screen, I can do this until all the screen is the the purple/red screen. Make sense?

Can you help with this problem?
