intel 82945G driver with 11.04/11.10

Attempting to upgrade from 10.04 (in steps) to 11.04 or 11.10 my onboard intel 82945G graphics chip
( lspci |grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)) gives only resolutions for 4:3 screens. It runs with driver VESA, and the log for X reports:

i915_driver_load ERROR failed to init modeset

The attempt to create an xorg.conf file with Xorg -configure didn't work either, I got some error message about wrong number of screens (sorry, I forgot to save it).

For now I reverted to 10.04, where everything runs fine, so this is not really urgent for me.

I didn't try that (didn't know). Since I am back to 10.04 now and don't want to waste another day with installing back and forth, it is difficult to try -- or can I try that also with the live CD?

OK, I tried it with the 11.10 CD.
It seems to find the intel driver but then to use VESA nevertheless, I still get only 4:3 resolutions.
Not being an expert I have no idea why.

Please follow these steps:

1.- Search the values of HorizSync and VertRefresh of your monitor.
2.- Open a terminal and type "sudo X configure :1" without quotes. This will create a new xorg.conf file.
3.- In the same terminal, type "gksu gedit xorg.conf.new" without quotes. This will open a text editor with the file that you have just created in there.
4.- You will see that it is divided in sections. Search for the Monitor section, and before the EndSection line of that section, add this two lines, without quotes:
"HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0"
5.- Replace the values in there with the values found in step 1.
6.- Save and close the file. If you want to, you can put it into a pastebin so I can check it before you move. If you do not want to, then move on to the next step.
7.- In a terminal, type "sudo mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf" without quotes. This will move the file to its correct position.
8.- Restart the PC.

In case it does NOT works, copy this command into a paper: "sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf", and boot into text mode, to enter this command without quotes and remove the file. If it works, please ignore this step.

Thanks for the advice. At this moment I think I'll refrain from further experiments and continue to use 10.04 as long as the LTS lasts, I'm too busy presently to spend more time with what started as a harmless upgrade.

For competeness sake here is the output of the "lshw..." command which I get under 10.04, the line

configuration: driver=i915 latency=0

appears to show that the 10.04 -kernel ( 2.6.32-36-generic) finds the driver, in contrast to what happens under 11.10.

Ok. This problem is VERY common in Intel chipsets. You just need to follow the steps I gave before, in comment #7. They fix the problem 90% of the time.

Ok -- I did what you suggested -- with great success. I'm just going to post my xorg.conf file here for others being that it took me hours to find something similar (posted at end). Just a quick followup. Any idea why the display controller still isn't claiming a driver? Do I set this also in xorg.conf adjusting the pci bus location, and driver name? (What does this do anyway? Does it matter??). And lastly is it normal to have 3 monitors listed when I only have one video card with one monitor? One of the devices seems to be the vga controller, the other the frame buffer, the other???

That is normal. What you need to do is just add the HorizSync and VertRefresh values in the xorg.conf file, while the rest should remain intact. It should pull the information by itself. But there's no problem with it. With having three monitors, that is also normal, it's the config of X server. And thanks for posting your xorg.conf file, even though every person should look for their own monitor values.
