Freezing and blank screen Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by Rich.b

Dell Dimension 2400 PC 512Mb Ram
Running Ubuntu 11.10
Since I upgrade to 11.10 there has been a number of problems:-

1/ Screen blanks for 10 to 15 seconds.
2/ Very thing freezes, mouse still moves but can do nothing else.
3/ Can't have multi desktops. e.g. open 2 different browsers in different desktops as I could with 11.04
4/ I understand that there could be a problem with graphics as I do not have a separate graphics card.
5/ Is there an option to upgrade graphic by adding a card, If so please advise the type of card.
6/ Is there an option to go back to 10.10 or 11.04?

The system only has PCI slots, so you can add a PCI video card (not PCI express). There are Nvidia PCI video card for very little and it will help a lot. What is the output of:

sudo lshw -C display

Thanks

If you search in dash for terminal you will see it, or you can press CTRL+ALT+T

The nvidia 6200 will run well. I have a 6150LE which runs compiz just dandy

Thank you Andrew, even my wife notice the difference in the picture quality on DVD's and streaming iPlayer.

At present I am only using a 15" ADVENT monitor.

The blank (black) screen has not reappear since I did the upgrades and also Ubunut 11.10 works much better.

Thanks again.

Till you get a GPU, you can use Unity 2D till then. Unity 2D does not need a GPU to run

There are nvidia proprietary drivers available with the driver install app, you will need to enter the BIOS of the system and disable the onboard video there.

Unity2D is part of a default install, it is selectable at login

When you first boot the screen and you see some system text or a splash screen, read the screen. You will see something like:

Press DEL top Enter setup

You will then press the key it names (DEL is common as is F1 or F2)

I have at start up Pressed F2 and can see some options.

But could not see how to change BIOS or disable onbroad video.

When say Press Del, do mean Delete, If so I have not yet tried that, but will.

thanks

Please advise how to check this, and how to Disable on board video.
