Video is not working. Black screen.

Asked by Alex

Hi!

I have ubuntu 10.04 LTR. After motherboard upgrade I cannot make it working. When I boot, I go to first graphical screen (with Ubuntu logo and dots) and then the screen turns black without anything on it. If I press power button on the computer, the ubuntu logo reappears and the computer shuts itself down normally. When I try to reboot in recovery mode - it shows the menu, and I can go to terminal prompt. However, when I select failsafeX in the recovery menu, some error flashes on the screen and I am back at recovery menu.

I am not good with command line prompt. Please help.

It is integrated video at Gigabyte LGA775 GA-G41MT-D3V motherboard. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3798

The spec says:
   1. North Bridge: Intel® G41 Express Chipset
   2. South Bridge: Intel® ICH7

i did. it didn't. :(

not sure if i added it right. In the GRUB menu I entered edit mode and in the script added nomodeset to the line with linux command. The PC hangs anyway.

Yeah you can add it for a one shot addition, it will not be added to subsequent boots (handy). Have you got full updates?

Does it connect to the web if you press CTRL+ALT+F1 and log in there? If so can you get full updates with:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

not sure when i shall press ctrl-alt-f1. I can select 'netroot' in recovery menu and get root console. then i can run both commands. both connects to the web, do some checking, and finish successfully without any additional download.

Eventually, failsafeX selection of recovery menu started to work again. If i select it I get a popup window with the message "ubuntu uses low resolution mode". When I click OK I get another menu. If I select boot in low res mode - I can get a desktop. How can I update video drivers from GUI?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Then reboot

Lucid has slightly older branches of stuff but is rock solid. Newer releases have the newer versions which can be beneficial to newer hardware

Just to summarize what had happened.

- After number of attempts to boot the system in GUI mode I was able to enter failsafeX mode from the recovery menu. From there I selected creation of new configuration for video driver and all started to work again.

I am not sure what fixed the issue with failsafeX mode. The last command I issues in terminal mode was sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade recommended by actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666). But it did not download anything, becouse the system was up to date at that moment already.

Also I want to post a link to very useful troubleshooting guide. It might help, if the issue was not resolved by itself.

And of course, many thanks to actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666), who offered help and guidance in the time of frustration and despair. I really appreciate the help!
