How to get 3d acceleration to work on xubuntu running on an old laptop

Asked by Jussi

My laptop has a i855 intel chip and i can't get the 3d acceleration to work. Even the simplest of 3d programs just slows down the progrm to almost a halt. I got so far on the internet after wasting countless hours battling this, to this site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Mavericki8xxStatus

but being a complete beginner on linux, i have no clue how can i create a file xorg.conf into the folder X11. It won't let me.

..or am i going about this the wrong way, is there another solution to having my 3D graphs working?

Could possibly use an xorg.conf file to define the screen better, should work then.

Great, so i was on the right track then. But still, how do you create the file and to what folder? And how can i define the screen better, does laptops have a model number for the screens or something?

Maybe i should try to explain my problem another way since my cries for help seems to go unheard.

3D works, but it is absolutely damn slow. I ran some 3d rubrics cube game and that one worked pretty fine, everything else, like a 3d billiard game i tried is unplayable due to the lag. I got a windows XP that runs games like warcraft 3 allright, so surely a simple pool game, or a 3d screensaver should work?

This is driving me nuts!
