after upgrade on 11.04: flashing screen

Asked by Moriz

On my netbook 10.10 was working well. Since upgrade to 11.04, there were stripes over display and screen, I had to choose "Classic -- no effects" mode. Using this, in every session an icon with a screen symbol besides a fast moving over and over again starting progress bar appears, and the display is flashing in time with it. During this, almost anything else is interrupted. Sometimes I can stop it by Alt-Ctrl-Del and Esc or by right-clicking on the desktop.

What is this behaviour meant to be and how can I avoid it?
