It sometimes will reboot with a recovery option. if I choose that , then Failsafe graphics mode I can get a workable gui. I don't always get the initial option though.

Your problem might be due to bug 727594, which is linked-to on the page whose URL Sam_ posted (and also listed under Related Bugs on this question page). If that is the case, then an update should solve your problem, since a fix has been released for it. When your computer boots, try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. That should hopefully give you a text login screen. Type in your username as prompted, and then type in your password as prompted. (These are the usernames and passwords you created when you installed Ubuntu, or which you had previously before upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04.) As you enter your password, you won't see any placeholder characters (like *). That's OK--just type it in and then press enter.

If you can connect your computer to the Internet using an Ethernet cable, you should do that, as it is somewhat complicated to get wireless working in Ubuntu without a GUI (unless it's already set up to work when there's no GUI login session). To find out if you have a functioning Internet connection, you could run a command like:

ping -c 4 www.google.com

Then update your Ubuntu system by running these three commands (wait to run the next command until the preceding command has completed and you have your $ _ prompt again):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When you run those commands, you may be prompted for your password. Like when you logged in, you won't see anything change on the screen as you type in your password, but that's OK.

After that's completed successfully, reboot the machine by running the command:

sudo reboot

If there are problems performing the above steps or the problem is not fixed once you've rebooted, please post again, and describe what went wrong in detail. On the other hand, if that fixes your problem, please mark this question as Solved.

A wired connection is difficult for me, but I can get the box to fire up in recovery 7 safex graphics mode. I presume I could then do the apt-get and apt-upgrades with same result as having done from commamd line?

I will give it a try and post result...

Yes, and in fact that is preferable, because with a graphical interface it is considerably easier to copy text from the Terminal and paste it here. Please try that, and if you get errors, you can copy all the text from the Terminal and paste it here for examination.

Still booting to black screen on normal boot; will run on failsafe x as before when given that option. Is there a way to tell GRUB to go ahead and just always use failsafeX?

I have tried the backported patches, no luck. I still can only get it to boot without GUI or sometimes in recovery mode and choosing FailsaleX graphics. FailsafeX would be fine if I could get it reliably, without having to do multiple hard reboots each time. Seems there should be something I could change in the GRUB or maybe the initial scripts to just go ahead and have the PC boot into failsafeX mode?

OK,so I finally got this box to boot in failsafeX MOST of the time Thank you all for you ideas; in my case the advice given did not help.

Out frustration I decided I would just load Ubuntu server onto a new (smaller) partition and learn more about the command line. I have been toying with the idea of learning to set up a server for website and local storage.

Just for the heck of it I tried to boot into the GUI version, and it works now MOST of the time. No Idea why that worked. Now if I could change the order that the versions come up at boot (server is on top) It would automatically boot to the GUI version.

Thank you again, hopefully this info might help others.

Oh wait. Upon further testing it is only about 50-50, but a vast improvement. If it boots to blank screen, rebooting to server, the reboot again to GUI seems to improve these odds.

Before reporting the new bug, I recommend carefully reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs if you haven't already (and also initiating the process of reporting it using Apport, rather than by clicking the "Report a bug" link in Launchpad, as Apport can often attach very valuable information.

Main issue seems to be Dell uses the crappiest parts & has an icestouos relationship with Microsoft, lol. This i915 chipset is the devil's work!!!

@ Eliah, well, this all happens at boot up, no way to copy or gapture bash,, so how do I get a report for apport?
There were kernel changes post 8.04 which left this hardware orphaned. Unfortunate; as there are hundreds of millions pc's using the crappy i915 embedded chipset.

Actually not sure which boot options are sufficient to get the system up.
Does LiveCD boot and then 'try without installation' option?
If yes I'd report a bug from there, and also post link to this question, just to let experts know about the issue and advising what can be done.

Yes I can boot from live cd. Once installed the gui is fine until reboot. If I could just get the pc to boot in using failsafex graphics, I think it would be fine.

Failsafe is available from login screen, but it doesn't even get that far.
Is it currently possible to get to recovery mode from boot menu, drop to root shell and attempt repair of X?
