Ubuntu upgraded from 10.04 to 11.04, black screen at boot

Asked by SK Iyer

Upgraded ubuntu from version 10 to 11 the latest available. However, I am unable to open the o/s via "Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic". Only blank (black) screen appears. Instead I have to open the o/s through old versions - 2.6.35-8-generic. Why it is so? Would be grateful for your kind help. Thank you.

Do you hear the normal start up sounds when booting with 2.6.38? If so, I'm suspecting an issue with your backlight. Try shining a flashlight on the screen, see if you can see anything.

Indeed, I can hear the normal start up music when booting with 2.6.38, a very very light shadow of the start up screen and nothing more than that.

I am now sending this reply from 2.6.35.28 (previous linux version). At the start up now two options - 1) 2.6.38 and (2) previous linux versions. I have to go for the second option, which will open up a second screen enabling me to select 2.6.35.28. I think, with all changes in the appearance (with a sliding menu on the left, new graphics etc), I am working from the new version of Ubuntu.

Hope, this information is helpful to help me.

Thank you.

The solution provided by unknown47 on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1743301 worked for me, to be able to edit the files I could get into the system by choosing in grub a previous version, otherwise you should be able to get there using a live cd.

Can you help with this problem?
