Presario M2000 I get a black screen

Asked by nuni712

I just upgrraded from 9.10 to 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

I am on a Compaq Presario M2000

Processor Intel™ Celeron™ M processor 1.50GHz
Memory 256 MB DDR SDRAM (two slots, 1 GB max.)
Harddisk 40 GB (4200 rpm)
Display 15.0" TFT XGA (1024x768)
Graphics Card Intel™ Extreme Graphics 2

I have to run it in failsafe mode, because else, I can see the welcome screen that reads UBUNTU, but after that, everything goes black and I can't even log in. I suspect a problem with the graphic card. .. 2am and still trying to come up with a solution... help?

Sorry, forgot to add that I really appreciate your help, I suspect it'll be easy to fix as it runs in safemode, but I don't have the skills to fix it myself...

THank you.

I only have the 9.04 CD, and I am running the 10.04 9.04 didn't give me any problems, it only happed as I updated to 10.04.
I started with the CD, followed the following steps

Chose your language.
Then make sure you have “Try Ubuntu without any changes” selected, and then press F6
Add this to the end of the command line:
    i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa

and as I am talking, the laptop is rebooting... and back to the black screen.

Sorry I am obviously useless at this...

I'd do a clean install of Lucid. Jaunty isn't supported anymore.

The boot options you added should resolve the blackscreen boot. here some other options may help:

Thank you. Just one last try before I format it again...

"Copy a new “known good” xorg.conf file" how do I find it?

Could can make one (if you don't know where one is, you don't have one)

You can boot to root recovery mode and run:

Xorg -configure

This will make a skeleton file you can copy to /etc/X11 which may help

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again

BUT!! If I navigate to /tmp on th e console, logged in as root, I type ls for the system to list the files and surprise! it isn't there either.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

GTT Incoherency Patch

NOTE: This patch is designed only for i855 chipsets. It is not supported for other i8xx chipsets.

Daniel Vetter has released a patch to hopefully solve the GTT incoherency problems. Stefan Glasenhardt has packaged this fix in two DKMS modules.

Install the updated -intel driver

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Install the 855gm PPA and the patched kernel modules
