Problem during upgrade to 10.10 on netbook

Asked by Anthony Sanderson

I have acer aspire one with ubnr 10.04 on. Upgraded to 10.10. After restart I have a background screen which continually alternates with a white screen. No desktop or menus. Both the wifi indicator and the hard disk indicator lights are flashing. No error messages or any other screen message. Please help.

PS No messages were displayed on restart. Just straight to alternating screen.

Was able to restart into failsafe graphics mode and get desktop. Roll down menu does not work and neither does update manager. Obviously this is a graphics card problem.

While in safe VGA mode, can you get updated. It may help.

If you log in as a different user, is it ok?

Update manager doesn't work but with terminal command apt-get update this is message:
W: GPG error: http://extras.ubuntu.com maverick Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 16126D3A3E5C1192

sudo apt-key adv --recv-key --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 16126D3A3E5C1192

Will get that added. You added a PPA but not its key

Do you have any logs in '/var/log/dist-upgrade/'? Looking over those may indicate more specifically what happened during the upgrade process. You could post the logs here or preferably, you could install pastebinit, then in a terminal type 'pastebinit -i /var/log/dist-upgrade/term.log' and finally paste the outputted url here.

Did what actionparsnip proposed and update worked. Now have fully functioning ubuntu 10.10 with the unity menu. Great stuff. So far everything seems to work fine. Only problem is at boot I get a udev error message which seems to be a common bug mentioned by many netbook users and is annoying but not necessarily serious. And start up is slightly slower than previous version of unbr. Thanks for all your help.
