Do I need to install graphic driver on ubuntu?

Asked by oliver goossens

Hi,

short and easy question.

I have my Lenovo thinkPad X301 - installed Ubuntu 10.4 on it and updated to 10.10 lately.

My graphic card inside is: Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

Everything seems ok, all good - all effects are accessible, its just scary how easy and good it is out of box.

Are the drivers installed also for this model of graphic automatically?
Is there a WAY how to see in ubuntu the drivers installed? Like in Windows under hardware manager?

Thank you

Ubuntu rocks!

Oliver

If you go to System>Administration>Hardware drivers, then there will be a list of any proprietry drivers that aren't installed by default, so you can pick and install them.

If you see a desktop at all, then there are at least some drivers installed! The issue is that they may not be direct draw drivers.

If you open a console and type
glxinfo | grep 'direct rendering'

then it will tell you if direct rendering is being performed or not.

If it is not, it's possible that installing additional hardware drivers will give an improved performance or improved graphics.

If you've got desktop effects enabled then there's a good chance direct rendering is already enabled. If this is the case then I wouldn't worry about installing any additional drivers.

Thank you.

I checked the glxinfo and yes the direct rendering is enabled so I think its ok.

But I dont have in my ubuntu 10.10 in Administration nothing as Hardware drivers listed - If I had I would check it. :(

Is these a package I miss?
