Warning! I am a Linux virgin, please take it easy on me.

Based on some similar posts I have not been able to resolve the issue.

Here is what I get when i run "compiz":
Screen blinks, switches focus between windows and then prints the following:
compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Launching fallback window manager

Please walk me through this.
I am very good in Windows environment, but Linux is another story.

One more thing that might be helpful. When I go to System -> Preferences -> Monitors, I get "Unknown" monitor and the options below cannot be changed:
Resolution is set to 1280x800 (16:10)
Refresh rate: 0 Hz
Rotation: Normal
