10.04 intel video i810 low resolution

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Dimension l667r with the Intel i810 chipset.

Video resolution is limited to 800 x 600.

Ubuntu recognizes the chipset and embedded video.

However, set up didn't create an xorg.conf file. I created one in the /etc/X11 directory; it didn't change anything.

Then I read a post to the effect that under 10.04, configuration information has moved to /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d. It suggest however, that most of the old help notes on xorg.conf are still relevant.

However, this directory doesn't have an xorg.conf file. It has:
05-evdev.conf 10-synaptics.conf 10-vmmouse.conf 10-wacom.conf

Should I copy to xorg.conf file I wrote to this location? Is there a file that tells Ubuntu where to look for configuration files that I would have to edit to make sure that the OS finds the xorg.conf?

Any other suggestions?

     No, the location for the file is still the same. The newer setup doesn't create an xorg.conf file, but the system is supposed to use it if you create one and put it in place. You might check the log file, normally at /var/log/Xorg.?.log (latest one there; probably the ? is a zero (0), but I don't guarantee that). It's plain text and lists what Xorg did during setup; if there's a problem with your setup file it might be shown there. If you still can't find anything try posting your log file and your xorg.conf file here.

First, my monitor is an ancient ADI Microscan 5EP, supporting up to 1280x1024, horizontal scan from 30-64Khz and vertical scan of 50-100Hz.

     Yeah, in the 'Intel' section of the log it indicates it wasn't able to determine anything about your monitor, so you're going the right route setting up xorg.conf yourself. You'll need to update the "Monitor" section manually to tell xorg about it. Try using 'sudo xresprobe any' to find out more about your monitor (sudo apt-get install xresprobe if you don't already have it installed). Personally, I like to change the lines to show my monitor's vendor and model so that I know it's using my setup as well, so you can change those to:

     That doesn't fix the problem, in and of itself, but is a nice cosmetic change. (The whole subsection is already there, but add the 'Modes' line).
      You can test the possibility ahead of time with either xrandr or xvidtune. Using xrandr -q will show modes supported by your video card; from there you should be able to use something like 'xrandr -s 1280x1024' to set it temporarily and make sure it will work. The xvidtune package has a lot more fix up capabilities if needed.

     Good to hear you got that far.... I believe 'xvidtune' will help
find correct settings to fix new problem. I haven't experienced
anything like what you're describing for a long time, though, so
recommend you post it as a new question if it gets difficult. I know
'xvidtune' will allow you to make a LOT of adjustments that can fix
screen settings, and it will output a modeline once you have the correct
settings, but not sure where to put the modeline in the newer version of
the xorg.conf file to get it to work these days. (Looks like there's an
example under widescreen setup near the bottom of the page at
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/x-config.html - but you'll have to
work with it to see if it helps you.)
