Desktop icons are big i cannot get good resolution on a old intel graphic card

I have recently been in a battle with my computer. I just upgraded the ubuntu system to the netbook edition and everything seemed to be going well. Now I have had problems back to back. I managed to solve most of them using launchpad but this one is special. I logged in and my icons and toolbars were huge. I fixed my log in screen, but my desktop is another story. I am still new to the ubuntu works but I know that I am operating under gnome and that's it. I want my icons, the panels, the cursor, and the internet toolbar smaller.

Please open a terminal from Apllications→Acessories→Terminal and type:

gconf-editor

navigate to the item

/apps/nautilus/icon_view/default_zoom_level

set it as "small" or "smaller"

The icons are now smaller, but how do I shrink the size of the toolbars/ panels for the desktop and internet screens?

Why all visual content so big. Please tell have you already to set the screen resolution...?

menu System→Preferences→Monitor

The resolution is 800 by 600 (4:3)

Can you get more higher resolution... by playing with the System→Preferences→Monitor ?

if not please open a terminal and type or better copy from here and paste into terminal the row below:

lspci | grep -i vga

Please copy from terminal and paste here the result.

I couldn't get a higher resolution. Here's what I got from terminal:

00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82810 DC-100 (CGC) Chipset Graphics Controller (rev 03)
