Update: Just discovered something that might make a difference to the bug reports.
The laptop won't currently run without an xorg.conf.failsafe file.
Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Driver "fbdev" EndSection
Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" EndSection
Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" Device "Configured Video Device" EndSection
I might try a vesa version and see if it will work.
