I retried with nomodeset kernel option
Stock kernel + xserver-xorg-video-intel - 3:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.4backtrack1
the libdrm was: libdrm - 1:2.4.5-0ubuntu4backtrack1

And it froze, though ssh was luckily available!
