What ati driver should I use for ubuntu-9.10

During installation computer hangup. I had to pickup save mode. Now I have vesa driver.
Can I use another one?.

If you run:

lspci | grep -i vga

You will see your video card.

If you go to http://www.ati.com you can see if the card is supported by the proprietary driver

The release version you use is moot, its the card you have as ATi suck and eventually drop support for cards they consider "old". If your card is not supported you will need to use the open driver ati or radeon but you will find guides online if you websearch the chip model you have.
