(EE) RADEON(0): drm: could not allocate surface for front buffer!

Hi, I have an ATI Radeon X700 Pro graphics card (uses RV410) that used to work OK with the x86 version of Ubuntu, but ever since I have upgraded to x64 I cannot get it to work. I am using the following driver.

ii xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2 X.Org X server -- ATI display driver wrapper

Whenever I start xserver I get a blank screen. Looking through the Xorg log there is one line that stands out.

(EE) RADEON(0): drm: could not allocate surface for front buffer!

I have searched online, but haven't had any luck finding a solution to this issue. Any ideas what might be the problem?

This is supposed to work, so please file bug report instead. But first try a live CD, so that we can be sure it is not just a problem with your installation/upgrade.

Thanks, Tormod. Sorry for the late reply, been very busy. Anyways, I tried the amd64 live cd and it behaved similarly. Interestingly, I decided to connect this to my normal LCD and there it worked without any issues. It wasn't just the live CD, gdm on the normal install also booted up without any issues. This made me think that this was related to the display and the most obvious thing that came to mind was the EDID info.

So, I tried "IgnoreEDID" option in my xorg.conf and now it doesn't switch to the blank screen and I don't get the error reported in this thread. Unfortunately, I am still getting weird scrolling lines, but I believe that is probably a different issue (modeline I am guessing). So, apparently the TV is reporting incorrect EDID issue. I am not sure if is worth putting a check in the code for whatever issue this EDID info had, would you suggest still filing a bug for this?

Thanks a lot for providing me with a direction to explore.

Yes, this seems like an EDID issue. Please file a bug using "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati" from the live CD. Even better if you can use a recent Karmic live CD.
