ATI 4870 1GB card gets squiggly streaking arrows

Asked by Mathew Hennessy

From time to time I get a squiggly, streaking arrow pointer using the opensource ATI driver with my Sapphire non-overclocked 4870 with 1GB memory. I'd prefer to not use the Catalyst driver, since the last time I tried that I couldn't have two screens with different resolutions joined together (which is NOT a limitation in the NVidia closed driver, I might note!).

Since the open-source support for these cards is progressing in leaps and bounds I would recommend trying out some newer versions, https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only first, then https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa if needed.

Can you help with this problem?
