Firstly make sure you go for a proper dual boot as per these instructions. There are a lot of other options but with this dual-boot youcombine the best of both OS's
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

There is a Wubi install which looks tempting but i'm beginning to call it the Wubi Wobbly.

There are a couple of places you can look up hardware but i usually just start out with a dual-boot and if it doesn't work then i use the space for another distro of linux until i find one to settle with for that machine. I'm often on really ancient machines tho.

Ubuntu is probably the best distro, which is one reason i use it. Lots of support for lots of hardware. Ubuntu is very much a "plug&play" system. Plug in a new monitor and it usually "just works", no fuss. Occsasionally you'll find it tough in the beginning but you'll soon get used to it.

Remember it's taken years to learn all you have about Windows, so give Linux a few weeks ;)

Good luck and welcome in :)

A couple of websites worth checking through just to see if there are any known issues.
