Kubuntu or Xubuntu?

Asked by Bradley Taranto

I did not like the default desktop in natty narwahl and used an alternative (3 menus upper left like choossers). That was awesome. 10.10 was awesome out of the box. Upgraded to 12.10 unity and I did not get along and fallback is buggy. Been reading and both kubuntu and xubuntu are interesting. How will they do with my gigabyte/amd board?

Both should be fine. I personally like the Gnome Classic desktop but it's a matter of personal choice.

You will find the Xubuntu desktop is more similar to the old "Gnome" desktop as in 10.04 but lots of people like Kubuntu too.

Fortunately you can try them both without installing as they will both run from a DVD or USB stick.

The Xubuntu download is here -- http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/

The Kubuntu download here -- http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download

Try them both. I would recommend you back-up and do a clean install of the one you prefer as otherwise you will have additional programs you don't need for example Ubuntu uses Gedit as its default text editor while Kubuntu uses Kate; but if you just want to add the additional desktop you can do that too. Tell us which you want and we can provide the necessary terminal command.

Id go for Xubuntu. It is Gtk based so your Gnome applications will install with fewer dependancies.
