Clicking and dragging image in eye of gnome crashes X

Asked by James on 2012-11-15

If I open any image with eog (I tried several different .png and .svg files), then click and drag with the left mouse button inside the window, X immediately crashes and I get taken back to the login screen. If no image file is open, nothing happens. I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04, fully updated, on a Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 laptop with an AMD Radeon HD 7600M graphics card and the official 64-bit AMD driver (not sure how to tell which version - it was the latest a couple of months ago anyway). /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old contains the following backtrace, which I assume is the relevant one:

Have you tired to use another desktop, like XFCE?

James (bistromathic1) said : #2

Hi, thanks for your help. I tried using xfce, and the behaviour is exactly the same.

Ok then the common denominator is Xorg.

What is the output of:

apt-cache policy xorg

Thanks

James (bistromathic1) said : #4

apt-cache policy xorg gives me:

xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.6+12ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:7.6+12ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.6+12ubuntu1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

All I can suggest is report a bug

Can you help with this problem?
