Ubuntu desktop does not launch after upgrade to 12.10

Asked by tog

I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 with no Ubuntu desktop problems.

After I upgraded to 12.10, when I login to my Ubuntu desktop, all I can see is my desktop wallpaper. The top menu or launchbar does not launch, and my files on the desktop also does not appear.

If I login to Gnome Classic desktop, it works fine, but with some resoulution problems. My screen resolution is limited to 1280x1024, and my display shows up as "Laptop" in the Displays menu. My computer is a desktop.

Thank you for your help in resolving this issue.

It is an oem pc. The mainboard is Intel DP35DP. The video card is ATI RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series].

Thank you

After this fix ubuntu will not load at all. It gets stuck even before the login screen. It boots only up to the screen where only ubuntu logo appears. Any advice?

I made a clean install to resolve the problem. I run 12.10 without proprietary drivers.
