Radeon Graphics Cards

Asked by Paddy Thomas

Further to my last question will a Radeon HD 7000 series work in HD mode with 12.10? If it does will Ubuntu recognise the card and automatically install the driver?

In Ubuntu you have two options with graphic cards

1st , the open source (radeon) driver. This driver is pre-installed and developed from Ubuntu developers. Is Open Source / Free software and you can use it to see if HD works.

2nd the closed source driver from AMD site. Ubuntu will notify you for the Additional Drivers and no it will not install them automatically . You have to go to Software Sources > additional drivers and install the driver you want.

Another way (not official way) is to go to AMD's site download the latest driver and install it manually (more difficult for newbies).
