wrong video card description by ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Dragan Raicici

Hi. I have a very wierd problem. I get two very different descriptions by Ubuntu if running the commands:
1) /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

and

2) sudo lshw -C display; lsb_release -a; uname -a

In theory they should be the same. Not for me.....For 1) I get:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.2

Not software rendered: yes
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program: yes
GL fragment program: yes
GL vertex buffer object: yes
GL framebuffer object: yes
GL version is 1.4+: yes

Unity 3D supported: yes

and for 2) I get:

Description: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Linux rdgary-Aspire-7745G 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The main reason for my question is that I am desperately trying to install my graphics card in order to run in ubuntu 3D, and installing the amd catalyst controller from the amd center did not work. After installing and rebooting,it ends up in an error on startup which tells me that the system does not recognize my current graphics configuration and I think that the fact that these 2 commands give different responses might be to blame.
Thank you for your time in reading this looong post.I appreciate it if you could help me in finding a solution for this!

Is the system a laptop?

The output is correct. You have a hybrid Intel/ATI GPU setup. There is an integrated Intel IGP (to conserve battery) and a discrete ATI GPU (for more demanding 3D tasks).

It is best not to install the proprietary ATI driver (and it is not needed for basic 3D stuff like desktop effects). Make sure you purge the proprietary driver completely: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Precise_Installation_Guide#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx

You use vgawitcheroo to switch between the two GPU's: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics

Do you have a /var/log/Xorg.0.log file? Post it to your bug.

> I ran a fps test using glxgears and it's pretty poor.
Probably because vsync is on to prevent tearing (60 fps).

What I'm basically trying to say is....Can I run Ubuntu on my high
 performance GPU?:)

It shouldn't be necessary, but have you looked in your BIOS for a switch to disable the integrated video? The Intel IGP should be able to run Unity with 3D effects.

Sorry, I meantyou should post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log here (this is not a bug report).
