How do I re-configure 3d graphics

I foolishly installed the recommended ATI drivers and was left with a monitor displaying "can't display this resolution: default resolution 1024x768 60Mhz"
Using the terminal I managed to remove the ATI drivers and got back to a 2D desktop (initially the std. 3D install). How do I reinstall / reconfigure the 3D desktop?

 I obtained the following if this helps:
