Hey do this it in your terminal:

> sudo apt-get update [It will reload you cache]

Then go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. You will find the required driver for your graphic card.

Please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto if you still have problems or this answer doesn't helped you.

I have done that and get a proprietary driver that will not load, have manually installed ATI Radeon driver that just does not work properly(video skips ,stalls ,crashes).Reverted to Ubuntu video driver which works, with no desktop visual effects, but it is more stable than the radeon driver.
The graphics card is an ATI Radeon Mobility HD4200.
I would like to take full advantage of the graphics card if I can,if you know of a workaround or the proper driver I would really appreciate it.
Thank you very much for the help!

Hi from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsAti it is found that ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 has give good performance if you use the default open source driver. But you will unable to get the full advantage of your graphic card as because the open source driver has its own limit and it under development.
You can head to http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide.

Thank you so much for your time and information,it is much appreciated.I am going to use the driver that came with the distro as it is at least stable. In the long run,the computer is much faster using linux than windows7,so I can put up with some average graphics .Plus the time I save not cleaning up the hard drive means I can mess around with the machine more.
Thanks again.
