flashing purple screen

Asked by eamon

I downloaded Ubuntu today and after the installation process it asks me to reboot. When I reboot it just sits at a flashing purple screen. My graphics card is AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series. I am new to linux and not really sure where to go from here. I recently tried to download slackware and had issues with the install. Someone advised me to "update your Mesa/libdrm packages with the ones from the /testing branch of the repository" which may have something to do with why ubuntu isn't working.
